Day 99 - 1 Kings 8-9

  1. The dedication of the temple coincides with the feast of booths. The main event is the pilgrimage with the ark, symbolizing Yahweh's invisible presence among his people, into the inner sanctuary where Yahweh will reside as if on a throne above the cherubim and the ark of the covenant. The editor insists that Solomon built the temple, not David. Solomon's dedicatory prayer begins with the terms of the Davidic covenant. The temple is THE place to pray since Yahweh has said that his name shall be there. His name is the greates gift that he can give, since it gives man power. Calamity, drought, famine, plagues are still believed to be the consequence of sin. In the prayer is hope that God will again restore them as he did when He delivered them from Egypt. A benediction follows acknowledging that without divine help people cannot keep God's laws. Solomon has a second vision in which Yahweh confirms that continuance of the dynasty is contingent on faithfulness to Yahweh and compliance to the laws. Solomon continues to build up Jerusalem and extends the city wall to enclose the palace and temple. Millo is some kind of stone work that did not go well and was in constant need of repair. Now Solomon establishes a commercial navy.
