  1. When Jezabel swears to kill Elijah he flees for his life beyond Beersheba. In despair he falls asleep in the shade of a broom shrub and is awakened by an angel, fed food divinely provided and journeys forty days and forty nights without nourishment. He, like Moses, is headed for the mountain of revelation, Sinai (or Horeb). In a cave God reveals himself not in the wind, the earthquake or fire, but in a soft whisper. God commands him to annoint Hazael as king in Damascus, Jehu as king of Israel, Elisha as his own successor. Chapter 20 gives an account of the constant wars between Israel and Damascus. Ben-hadad of Damascus lays seige to Samaria. He demands the city be opened up for pillage. Ahab determines an attack at noon with 232 men. They are followed by a full army to defeat the Syrians. When Ben-hadad attacks in the plain Ahab wins again. He not only spares Ben-hadad, but puts him in his own chariot. They discuss economic concessions. An unnamed prophet predicts Ahab's death as penalty for leniency.
