  1. Jehu is anointed king of Israel. He sets out in his chariot for Jessreel, where Joram is convalescing in his palace. Ahaziah of Judah is also there. When Joram meets Jehu he realizes his danger and tries to flee. Jehu kills him and orders the corpse thrown into Naboth’s vineyard. Ahaziah flees, is shot, dies in Megiddo, and is buried in Jerusalem. The queen mother, Jezebel, is flung from a window and trampled by horses. Jeru continues the purge. He massacres the princes of Israel, the princes of Judah, and the worshipers of Baal. Athaliah, daughter of Ahab, immediately seizes the throne by killing off the entire royal family. Only Joash escapes. Jehosheva hides the baby in the priestly quarters of the temple. Athaliah rules for six years, unaware of the crown prince’s existence. Jehoiada plans the coup d’etat. The noise of the public coronation makes the queen aware. She is executed near the palace. The people of the land take a more important part in political affairs. The chief priest of Baal, Mattan, is slain. Jehoash reigns Judah for forty years.
