Day 96 - 1 Kings 1-2

  1. That the powers of a senile male could be restored by contact with a virgin was a common primitive belief. Abishag is such a girl for David. Adonijah, the crown prince attempts to take over the throne like his late brother Absalom. Nathan, the prophet, advises Bathsheba to inform David of the plot and take action. Benaiah gives detailed instructions on the immediate coromation of Solomon as king. Adonijah learns the disconcerting news, runs to the sanctuary, touches the horns of the altar, and invokes Yahweh's protection. Solomon promises pardon, but demands loyalty of Adonijah. Chapter 2 begins with a favorite Hebrew literary genre. David gives counsel with references to statutes, commandments, ordinances, testimonies, and the law of Moses. Jerusalem becomes the City of David. Adonijah requests Abishag as his wife. Solomon kills Adonijah. Solomon kills Joab, in spite of the fact that he is in a sanctuary. Shimei is told to remain in Jerusalem for life. However, Solomon sends him to Gath to get runaway slaves and kills him under the pretext that he disobeyed the rule. Solomon is firmly estalished as David's successsor since he has eliminated all the threats.
