Day 109 - 2 Kings 12-14

Day 109 - 2 Kings 12-14

  1. Jehoash reigns in Judah and attempts to repair the Jerusalem temple. To avert misappropriation of funds a chest is made with a hole in the lid where worshipers can deposit their funds directly. Priests will not suffer since their income comes from guilt and sin offerings. The Syrians attack ransacking the temple and the royal treasuries. Joash is assassinated an his son succeeds to the throne. Jehu is succeeded by Jehoahaz then Jehoash (Joash) in Israel. Joash visits Elisha on his deathbed. The king is told to shoot an arrow to insure victory at Aphek, to strike the ground with arrow three times to insure similar victories. Amaziah reigned Judah twenty nine years. He executes his father’s murderers but spares their children, very unusual in this time. Amaziah successfully invades Edom. He then challenge Jehoash of Israel. Judah is disastrously defeated. Amaziah is captured, taken to Samaria and Jerusalem is sacked. When Jehoash dies Jeroboam II releases Amaziah who lives for fifteen years before he is assassinated. Jeroboam expands the border to the Sea of Arabah. The obituary contains difficulties in that Damascus and Hamath never belonged to Israel.
