Day 117- 1 Chronicles 8-10

  1. More genealogies, Benjamin, and the house of Saul. The postexilic residents of Jerusalem are listed; Israelites, laymen, priest, Levites, and gatekeepers. The author is especially interested in the office gatekeeper which goes back to the time of Moses and was sanctioned by Samuel and David. Because the history of David and his rule is the most important subject in the Chronicler's history of the Hebrews, he omits the period of the judges, the events of Saul's life, but idealizes the life of David. According to the Chronicler, Saul's miserable failure as king of Israel was due to his disobedience to the Lord's commandments and his company with a medium. On the other hand, the reigns of David and Solomon were glorious.
