  1. Azariah is the throne name for Uzziah. He becomes a leper and his son Jotham governs. Civil war breaks out in the North. Zechariah is murdered by Shallum and the dynasty of Jehu comes to an end. Shallum reigns one month to be assassinated by Menahem. During Menahem's reign wealthy men are assessed a heavy tax. Pekahiah, after two years is assassinated by Pekah. During Pekah's tenure the Syro-Ephraimitic Was against Assyria occured with disatrous effects on Israel. The Assyrians captured areas of Galilee and Gilead. Pekah was assassinated by Hoshea. Hoshea was the last Northern king. During Jotham's reign the upper gate of the temple was rebuilt. Ahaz is said to have burned his son as an offering like Mesha. Syria and Israel unite to revolt against Assyria and try to force Judah to join. Ahaz bribes the Assyrians who capture Damascus. In Damascus Ahaz sees an Assyrian altar which he copies for the Jerusalem temple. Because of heavy tribute due to Assyria Ahaz has to dismantle some of the bronze equipment of the temple. Chapter 17 gives us the theological and ethical viewpoint. The Israelites are considered sinners in the eyes of an angry God. Israel, not Assyria, is blamed. The Israelites ignored the prophets. They neither repented nor reformed. The king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthat, Avva,... and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the people of Israel. Thus, the worship became contaminated by various foreign cults. Thus begins the Jewish attitude toward the Samaritans.
