Day 102 - 1 Kings 16-18

Day 102 - 1 Kings 16-18

  1. The prophets remind me of Rachel Maddow and Glenn Beck. Here we have the prophet condemning Baasha's destruction of the house of Jeroboam. However this is considered the fulfillment of a previous prophetic word. Baash is succeeded by his son Elah, who is assassinated. Zimri begins his reign with a bloodbath of his predecessor's house. And, we worry about layoffs? He lasts one week. After four years of civil war all Israel elects Omri king. Omri conquered Moab, made a marriage alliance with Sidon and built Samaria as the new permanent capital of Israel. The editor is particularly interested in Ahab, Omri's successor. Ahab marries Jezebel, who substitutes the worship of Baal for that of Israel's God. Wrath is coming! Elijah is the central figure in chapters 17 and 18. His name, Yahweh is God, is the central theme. Elijah predicts a drought and flees for protection. God commands ravens to feed him twice daily. At Zarephath Elijah is fed by an impoverished widow. She lacks sufficient food when miraculously the meal and oil are multiplied. When the widow's son dies Elijah revied him and restores him to his mother. Ahab has Obadiah in search of Elijah. When found, Elijah bids Obadiah summon the king with the promise that he will not disappear by the Spirit of Yahweh. The king and prophet square off in the blame game. Now we witness a contest between Yahweh and Baal, Elijah and the Canaanite prophets. Elijah wins when after prayer Yahweh's fire falls from heaven. Now we wait for rain. Elijah goes to the top of Carmel to do the rain ritual. Ahab hurries back to Jezreel. Rains descend.
