Day 89 - 2 Samuel 8-11

  1. Seldom do we have an eye witness account in the Bible- not in Paul, Mark, Luke, Matthew, or John. Here, however, we have a war correspondent who journals the Davidic wars led by Joab, commander in chief and Benaiah, captain of David's foreign bodyguard, the Philistines. David seeks to find offspring of Jonathan and locates the lame son, Mephibosheth. He is brought to the court and all Saul's former possessions are restored to him. Hanun shaved off the beard of one of David's servants and stripped him naked. The beard is the Semitic pride of manhood. Nakedness is shameful. Another excuse for war! Joab leads the force against the Syrians, Abishai, the one against Ammon. David now encounters Bathshebe who is bathing on the palace roof. Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, one of David's professional soldiers, becomes pregnant with David's child. David tries his best to have Uriah sleep with Bathsheba to no avail. David then puts Uriah in harm's way and is killed. Nathan, the court prophet, tells David an imaginery account of injustice whereupon David demands death. David is told that he himself is the guilty one in the fictional story. Here for the first time, we see a man with a conscience! He is guilt ridden.
