The Chronicler lists the descendants of Levi, in particular,Elkanah, in order to show that Samuel came from the line of Levi, though according to 1 Samuel he was an Ephraimite. Verses 31-48 contain the genealogies of the chief singers of David; Heman, Asaph and Ethan. The duties of the priests are described as Moses commanded. The genealogies of chapter 7 are uncertain, inaccurate, but important to the Chronicler perhaps because they served David. The writer's point seems to be to attribute to David the origin of the choir services performed by the levitical familes in the postexilic temple at the time of the Chronicler.
