Day 54: Deuteronomy 8-11

Day 54: Deuteronomy 8-11

  1. There is something to be said about going back to read the original sources of our faith. I have come to realize that these are poets and theologians who are inventing the language of speaking about that Power in our lives that transcends our ability to put into words. In these barbarian times the Hebrew people developed faith, a trust in an invisible God who led them out of Egypt and into the promised land. No matter how tough the times they held firm to the trust in Yahweh. They know that "man does not live on bread alone, but that man may live on anything that the Lord decrees". Didn't we just hear Jesus say this same thing in last Sunday's readings? God now takes on the persona of a father"know that as a man discipines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you". Focus. Focus. Focus. If the Hebrews would but focus on the big picture of how Yahweh brought them out of Egypt "for it is he who gives you power to get wealth". What is the Egypt in my life that helps me to not sweat the small stuff and stay focused on the big picture? "God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteiousness". God is like a grandmother of unconditional love. Again the people of God are reminded "to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul". These desert people move into "a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven". Mighty still is the word-blessing and curse.
