Day 48: Numbers 27-30

Day 48: Numbers 27-30

  1. At first, women step forward and they are heard. If the father dies and has no sons, the daughters become the legal heir to the land. Moses dies and passes some of his authority to another charismatic leader, Joshua, "a man in whom is the spirit". Otherwise, Eleazer, the priest, will be the intermediary between Yahweh and Joshua. The description of celebrating the sabbath, passover, feast of unleavened bread, first fruits around the lunar calendar helps me appreciate the liturgical calendar that we use today. Sacred time is not linear. It is circular. In the last part of the reading, women are put in their place in submission to their father or husband. A woman is unable to take a binding vow. It is a "thoughtless utterance" unless approved by the man in her life.
