The first chapter reads like the lyrics to a ballad, lots of repitition from verse to verse. In each verse "all who were able to go forth to war" are counted. Does Yahweh now have an army? Each tribe counts its warrior except for the Levites. The Levites are appointed over the taberanacle. In the wilderness they camp with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps. And, there, Yahweh resides in their midst.
