Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses. After all, he married a Cushite. Yahweh called their hand for challenging MOses' unique realtionship with Yahweh and struck Miriam with a leprous condition. Moses sent out a spy from each tribe to check out the land of Canaan. The report was that it was the land of milk and honey, but occupied by big, strong inhabitants. Again, the people "murmur against Moses". They want to return to Egypt. Moses convinces Yahweh to save face. "The Lord is slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love". SO, they wander for forty years before the next generation comes to inhabit the promised land.
