Day 42: Numbers 9-11

Day 42: Numbers 9-11

  1. Kendra gave me the guiding question for next week's assignment. Why read the Hebrew scriptures? Then I remember that Jesus read the Hebrew scriptures. It was not the Torah that he was preaching against, but the letter of the law interpretation. So, perhaps, Reclaiming Christianity means to read the Hebrew scriptures through the eyes of Jesus.

In chapters 9-11 Moses is approached with an exception to the law. "Wait that I may hear what the Lord will command concerning you." We still have an insistence on including the stranger. "You shall have one statute, both for the sojourner and for the native". A new instument, the trumpet. The Israelites go to war "against the adversary who oppresses you". Then comes the complaining about the food. Where's the meat? Moses gets overwhelmed with the responsibility of leadership."The burden is too heavy for me". A familiar story arises when two men begin prophesying. Moses, like Jesus, says "Would that all the Lord's people were prophets". Yahweh produces a miracle, the meat. Stuffed with quail some become ill. They interpret the illness as punishment from an angry God.
