The Israelites are urged to live according to the ten commandments to become responsible citizens in God's chosen community. They further update their thinking about Yahweh. "We have found out today that a man can still live after Goed has spoken with him". They hear "the voice of the living God". False gods are dead. The vertical dimension of the covenant to be cited by Jesus is stated here "you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength". They are to live "in fear of the Lord" i.e. in sacred reverence, awe and respect of the Divine.
