In chapter 4 we hear of the "Ark of the covenant" an oblong box, symbolic of Yahweh's presence. The Philistines are full of superstition but fight "like men." The ark is captured and Eli's sons are dead. Eli dies in shock of hearing that the ark has been captured. Eli's daughter-in-law upon this news dies in childbirth. The ark is moved from city to city with disastrous results of the plague. The ark is transferred to Kiriathjearin till David can transfer it to its permanent location in Jerusalem. Eleazar is given charge of the ark. Samuel judged Israel "all the days of his life. And he went on a circuit year by year to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah." We are still flirting with monarchy.
