  1. The judges, more heroes of Israel. "The Israelites grew stronger, they impressed the Canaanites as laborers, but did not drive them out." This is the recurring theme of disobedience to Yahweh for which the Yahwist will have to pay according to the theology of the day. Furthermore, they "were not to make a pact with the inhabitants of this land" and they were supposed to tear down all the altars. Another sin for which they will be punished. The biggest sin of all, however, is idolatry. Idolatry was abandoning the Lord and serving Baal and the Ashtaroth. (3:7-9)Deuteronomic theology-sin, punishment, repentance, deliverance"Because the Israelites had offended the Lord by forgetting the Lord, their God and serving the Baals and the Asherahs, the anger of the Lord flared up against them, and he allowed them to fall in the the power of Cushan-rishathaim, king of Aram Naharaim, whom they served for eight years. But when the Israelites cried out to the Lord,he raised up for them a savior, Othniel, son of Caleb's younger brother..."
