Day 72: Judges 9-11

Day 72: Judges 9-11

  1. New enemies emerge, the Ammonites and the Philistines. Abimelech, the son of Gideon and a Canaanite woman, after a parable poem against monarchy, was made king under the sacred tree at Shechem. The Israelites viewed kingship like blue collar workers view corporate management. The best in the clan or the company do not have time to be king. Abimelech is killed by his own armor-bearer after a lethal blow to the skull by a woman. Hence, he died in dignity i.e. by the sword, not by a woman. Jephthah, another half-Isrealite, leads the Isrealites in war against gods that even the editors get confused. Jephthah, a Yawist, relapses into the tradition of human sacrifice in sacrificing his daughter. "Father, you hav made a vow to the Lord. Do with me as you have vowed."
