Day 70: Judges 4-5

Day 70: Judges 4-5

  1. Prose and poetry. First, we have the prose account of Deborah, the prophetess, commanding Barak"Up! For this is the day in which the Lord has given Sisera into your hand. Does not the Lord go out before you?" Barak defeated Sisera. He "alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot". Merged into this story is a story about Jabin, the legendary foe of Israel. Jael, the wife of Heber "took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him(Sisera) and drove the peg into his temple...And the hand of the people of Israel bore harder and harder on Jabin the King of Canaan, until they destroyed Jabin king of Canaan. Now we turn to an exquisite literary Hebrew poem, the Song of Deborah, based on the theological motif of Yahweh's destruction of any Hebrew enemy.
