Day 26: Exodus 31-34

Day 26: Exodus 31-34

  1. God is the source. Intelligence is of God. Talent and skills are attributed to the Spirit of God.
31:3 "I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship."
It seems that the People of God are losing their identity. How do you know you are of the People of God?
31:2 "You shall keep my sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you..."
So, the sabbath becomes so important that anyone "who profanes it will be put to death". Left alone the people of Moses loose their way and begin to participate in Canaanite cult worship. God now becomes an impatient, wrathful God. God has to be reminded of "Abraham, Isaac, and Israel". Thus, an intermediary is necessary. Hebrew theology now takes on the doctrine of atonement and Moses offers himself to appease this whimsical, angry God. It seems that Yahweh has turned and makes bad things happen to bad people. Is our theology much more sophisticated after these thousands of years? I read a lot of fear in this religious community about to be absorbed by the "Cannaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites." It seems that Yahweh is not living up to expectation. God occasionally shows up at these tent meetings. It must be like those days when I ask where is God in all this. In 34:6 Yahweh claims to be "a God...abounding in steadfast love". These nomadic people figure out how to make the agricultural feasts into their own and Moses becomes a favored negotiator with God. Chapter 34 ends with the verse that Dan Brown points out as being mistranslated in the Vulgate which gave rise to Moses being painted with horns i.e. Moses' face shone was mistranslated as Moses' face had horns.
