Day 18: Exodus 5-7

Day 18: Exodus 5-7

  1. 5:3 "The God of the Hebrews has met with us.." At first these words seemed to imply to me that we were going to have a debate between the Hebrew God and the Egyptian God. Then,
5:4 "Why do you take the people away from their work?" makes me think that Pharaoh is more interested in extending the work week like we did when we started keeping businesses open on Sundays. It seems that setting a day aside for rest and worship is losing ground in this culture.
5:14"...Why have you not done all your task of making bricks today?" Now working conditions become oppressive to the point of slavery.
6:1 "Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh..." God has spoken. Hope is alive.
7:3"But I will harden Pharoaoh's heart.." God seems to have it pretty easy to live up to all promises made. Yahweh works through human stubborn tendencies and nature. I am reminded of the prayer of St. Francis. "Lord, make me an instrument" It is us through which God delivers.
