Chapter 20 ends with the purpose of the Gospel according to John; “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.” The obvious ending of the gospel in Chapter 20 is followed by two narratives and a colophon. The colophon makes clear that the beloved disciple had died by the time the gospel was published. But, in a sense the beloved disciple remains until Jesus comes again. In every generation disciples whom Jesus loves and who love Jesus in return shall remain with us.
