Day 255 Daniel 1-2

Day 255 Daniel 1-2

  1. Rev. Michael Piazza in Liberating Word says about the Book of Daniel, “The Book of Daniel is set during the exile after the fall of both Israel and Judah. The central character is an exile who is taken back to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar. His name is Daniel, known mostly for his episode in the lion’s den….The dating and authorship of Daniel has been a matter of great debate among Jews and Christians. The traditional view holds that the work was written by a prophet named Daniel who lived during the sixth century BC. However, many modern Biblical scholars maintain that the book was written or edited together in the mid-second century BC, and that most of the predictions in the book refer to events that already had occurred. The book was written in both Aramaic and Hebrew, which certainly argues that it is the product of a later author recording legends or parables and apocalyptic visions….The book of Daniel begins with an account of how King Nebuchadnezzar commands a group of handsome young Jewish men to be rounded up and brought to the palace. There they will be well fed and educated. Daniel (his Hebrew name) and Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (their Babylonian names) are among the men gathered and were offered this honor…Daniel persuades the Palace Master to let them live on vegetables and water. After three years, Daniel wins over the king by interpreting a dream for him. The reward for Daniel and his friends is to be given royal appointments in the government of the king.”
