The Israelites wage holy war against the Midianites. They recount how Yahweh "made them wander in the wilderness forty years". They recite the stages where they "set out from ...and encamped at..." until they settled the land Yahweh had given them. Their God was not remote or abstract but rather an active deity who made good his promises in tangible ways.
