Day 283 Matthew 15-17

Day 283 Matthew 15-17

  1. Rev. Michael Piazza in Liberating Word say about Matthew 15:21-28, “A Canaanite woman came to Jesus seeking healing for her demon-tormented daughter. According to the story, Jesus ignored her until his disciples finally came and asked him to send her away because she kept shouting at them. Jesus said to them, “I was sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” …The woman would not be sent away, though, and she fell on her knees to plead her daughter’s case. To her, Jesus says, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” And the woman rose up and slapped him silly … well, if I had been the woman pleading for my child that is what I would have done. She didn’t do that, but she reminded him that “even dogs get to eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” Jesus then commends her faith and heals her daughter…Is it possible that what we have here is a person at the very margins of life helping Jesus to recognize that he is not just the Jewish Messiah, but that he was anointed by God to help us all? Jesus’ initially responds to her as his role dictated, but, by her faith, her persistence and her relentless love for her child, this woman perhaps shifted Jesus’ understanding of himself and his calling.”
