Day 280 Matthew 8-9

Day 280 Matthew 8-9

  1. Jesus cures the leper, not a spoken cure. He touched him. Next Jesus cures the servant of a centurion, a Roman, a gentile, a person of faith. He had an expectancy of a healing which was granted. Again, with the touch of his hand, Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law. Next Jesus points out how different the life of his follower is from the life of a scribe. Jesus not only displays power over nature and demons but “the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins”. To the annoyance of his disciples, Jesus feasts with sinners. “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” The real danger of schism occurs when it is observed that Jesus’ disciples do not fast. Perhaps it is at this time that Jesus’ realizes the impossibility of his teachings being incorporated into Judaism. Like new wine in old wineskins, both Judaism and the new order of the kingdom will be spilled. In the home of Jairus, Jesus tenderly says, “little girl, get up” and she lives. Jesus was not too busy to heal even those who touched his garment. He called her a “courageous daughter”. After healing the blind and the deaf he faces the crowd with compassion. “he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray….” Everything is preceded by prayer.
