Rev. Michael Piazza in Liberating Word says “Zechariah called the people back to build a temple not just for themselves, but for the future. The last half of his message speaks of a messiah who someday will come to bring peace on earth. The most famous passage of all is found in chapter 9: Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 My personal favorite, though, is 9:12. It is the appeal of God through the prophet: Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope. Maybe that is what keeps prophets preaching, calling, harassing and cajoling. They are prisoners of hope, which, of course, is a description of all people of faith. We keep on working, praying and believing because we are prisoners of hope who believe the best is yet to be, but that it won’t happen by magic.”
